Strengthening Our Cities:
Mayors Responding to Global Climate Change
![]() |
Alaska Conservation Foundation, ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI-USA), The US Conference of Mayors, and the Municipality of Anchorage are sponsoring a special gathering of mayors from around the country
to address the complex and compelling issue of global climate change.
The rapidly accelerating effects of climate change are more evident in
Alaska than anywhere else on the globe, presenting an immediate need
for mayors and other local leaders to take steps to assess and adapt to its
impacts. The changes taking place in Alaska now will also affect sea level,
temperature, and weather patterns around the globe. |

During the meeting, mayors will meet with tribal officials, Alaska leaders, business and government representatives, and climate scientists. Mayors will tour the Kenai Peninsula and Kenai Fjords National Park to see firsthand the devastating impacts of record insect infestations, rapidly retreating glaciers, and changes to the marine environment caused by global warming. |

Mayors will also see and hear how mayors are taking the lead in putting solutions on the ground to reduce global warming impacts and make their communities more resilient to its effects. The meeting will provide mayors with the tools to replicate these successes in their own communities. |

This special gathering will take place in Girdwood, Alaska, just 40 miles south of Anchorage in a breathtaking valley overlooking Turnagain Arm and surrounded by the Chugach National Forest. |
