Why Give to ACF

Alaska—it is a place that evokes images filled with the overwhelming power and magnificence of nature. Yet for all its magnificence, Alaska’s wilderness cannot survive without your help.

Alaska is one of the very few places in the world today where diversity of wildlife and the natural bounty of a pristine environment are essentially undiminished. It is the quintessential symbol of wilderness and of thriving, intact ecosystems. Alaska is a place where vast herds of caribou still run free; where massive, deep blue glaciers crash into pristine oceans; where 1000-pound grizzly bears forage the streams and rivers for brilliantly colored red salmon; and where millions of migratory birds return each year to hatch and feed their young. In short, it embodies Nature’s richest and most beautiful gifts.

It is crucial to remember, however, that all of these treasures are extremely fragile and can be destroyed forever by imprudent development and thoughtless, wasteful policies. Your support helps ACF ensure that Alaska’s natural beauty and resources are safeguarded for present and future generations.

While every gift that ACF receives is vitally important, there is no higher compliment to our stewardship than an unrestricted gift. An unrestricted gift is a contribution to ACF with no restrictions from the donor on how it is to be used. Unrestricted support—gifts large and small from donors across the country who say, in effect, “Use this where it is needed the most”—are essential to providing the best possible help in the fight to preserve and protect Alaska.

An unrestricted gift works wonders in so many ways. It allows ACF to:Whale ribs planted in snow at entrance to Inupiat cemetery, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

  • Meet Alaska’s greatest needs,
  • Support Alaska’s conservation community,
  • Rise to new challenges,
  • Ensure operational and programmatic continuity,
  • Hire and retrain extraordinary staff with substantial expertise, and
  • Meet emerging objectives.

Unrestricted support is the most flexible kind of support. It is critical because the threats to Alaska’s ecosystems are ever-changing and often sudden. Unrestricted funds can cover unexpected, urgent, and emergency needs, thereby keeping endowment and reserve funds in place. These gifts allow our Board of Trustees, our Grantmaking Committee, and the executive director to determine how best they can help Alaska now.
